National Park Week

This week is National Park Week and since I am passionate about national parks, I thought it would be a good time to talk about them.  National Park Week runs from April 21-29, which is just over a week.  During this time, the National Park Service or NPS is offering free admission to all of its 397 national parks around the country and hosting special events to celebrate this occasion.  Check out the National Park Service’s Promotions and Discounts page for more details.  To find a national park, check out these easy to use websites: Find A Park – National Park Foundation or the National Park Services Find a Park Page.

In Indiana, there are 3 national parks: Indiana Dunes National Lakes (which is on the banks of Lake Michigan), George Rogers Clark National Historical Park (which is in Vincennes), and Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial (which is near Lincoln City).  Some fun facts: Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial became Indiana’s first national park on February 19, 1962 and the Indiana Dunes National Lakes have been expanded 4 times since its creation as a national park in 1966.

As a Federal Depository Library, ET2 has maps and resources on the National Park Service and on specific parks.  Most of these resources will be shelved in the department’s SuDoc collection, since they are distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program, or they may be available electronically.  One specific interesting resource that you might be interested in is the annual National Park Service Statistical Abstract, now available on an interactive website, which tracks use of our national parks. For other resources check in IUCAT. Here is a large sampling from IUCAT, which lists resources that the “United States. National Park Service” contributed.  To make the results more manageable, I would suggest searching for information on a specific park that you are interested in.  As always, feel free to come into to ET2 with any questions you have.
