Digitizing Film Guide

by Carla Arton, Director of Technical Operations (Film), Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative, Indiana University. This is an archival version of a post originally published on the MDPI blog, which ran from 2017-2020.

The film digitization phase of MDPI began in the fall of 2017, charged with digitally preserving 30,000 reels of IU’s significant and at-risk films to ensure long-term access for research and teaching.

As of October 8th we have digitally preserved over 7500 reels of film / 2100 hours / 2.8 Petabytes.

This is how we did it.
