Golden Hour Cinema: Cozy Fall Recommendations from Media Services

There’s a distinct shift that happens on campus when autumn hits. The air turns crisp along the Sample Gates, the campus canopy turns brilliant shades of gold, and study sessions naturally migrate indoors. As the days grow shorter, there’s nothing quite like unwinding with a movie that matches the cozy, reflective mood of the season.

Whether you’re looking for a nostalgic classic, a moody thrill, or an atmospheric indie, the Media Services collection at Wells Library has you covered. Skip the endless scrolling on commercial streaming platforms. Our physical stacks and digital streaming databases offer a curated escape right at your fingertips.

Here are three autumn-inspired films available through Media Services to add to your fall watchlist:

1. Rushmore (1998)

Poster for "Rushmore" (1998). A young man in glasses, blazer, and red beret raises his fist in the air. Behind him are an older man, smiling, and a woman looking quizzical.

Set against crisp autumn leaves, classic prep school blazers, and a legendary British Invasion soundtrack, Wes Anderson’s Rushmore (1998) is steeped in a melancholic fall aesthetic that mirrors its central story of transition and loss. The film follows Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), an eccentric, academically failing prep schooler who juggles dozens of ridiculous extra-curriculars while trying to win the affection of an older, widowed teacher (Olivia Williams). When Max befriends Herman Blume (Bill Murray), a wealthy, disillusioned industrialist who also falls for the teacher, their cozy back-to-school world devolves into a petty, seasonal feud. Ultimately, the film’s rich, amber-toned visuals reflect a deeper emotional autumn—capturing that bittersweet threshold where both an overconfident teenager and a burnt-out adult must finally shed their illusions, face their underlying grief, and allow themselves to grow up.

2.Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Scene from "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009). A bipedal fox in a yellow pinstripe suit speaks before a group of assembled rodents. Roots line the walls of the underground room behind them.

Drenched in warm hues of burnt orange, amber, and deep gold, Wes Anderson’s stop-motion masterpiece Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) is visually and moodily the quintessential autumn film. The story follows the suave Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney), who struggles to resist his wild animal instincts and abandons his quiet life as a newspaper columnist to pull off one last grand heist against three ruthless local farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Rich with crisp orchard aesthetics—from stolen hard cider and rustling fallen leaves to cozy corduroy suits—the film uses its harvest-season backdrop to mirror its deeper themes of instinct versus maturity. As Fox’s underground community comes together to outsmart the farmers, the film turns the rustic charm of late autumn into a cozy, comforting celebration of family, survival, and embracing our wild, flawed nature.

3. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Scene from "Good Will Hunting" (1997). A man with grey in his beard, dressed in tweed and a brimmed hat, sits beside a younger man in a bomber jacket on a park bench. Their gazes are distant and contemplative.

Set against the backdrop of New England collegiate life, crisp autumn walks, and deep conversations, Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting (1997) is a classic staple for the fall semester that captures the emotional weight and transitional feeling of the changing seasons. The film follows Will Hunting (Matt Damon), an unrecognized math genius working as an MIT janitor whose volatile past and deep-seated trauma keep him emotionally guarded. After an arrest, he is forced into therapy with Dr. Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), leading to iconic, leaf-strewn park bench discussions about vulnerability, fear of abandonment, and self-worth. Surrounded by classic Boston brick campuses, cozy oversized sweaters, and Elliott Smith’s melancholic soundtrack, the movie seamlessly ties its picturesque harvest-time setting to its central journey: facing one’s inner frost in order to embrace a new season of personal growth.
