Join Docuseek in honoring master Chilean documentarian, Patricio Guzmán, who passed away last week at age 85. In remembrance, Docuseek, in concert with distributing partner Icarus Films and streaming partner Ovid.tv, are making his filmography available to watch for free until 6 PM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2026, in the US and Canada.

The IUB Libraries provides access to all of the films listed below. Born in Santiago de Chile in 1941, Guzmán was one of the leading documentary filmmakers in the world. He studied filmmaking at the Film Institute at the Catholic University of Chile and at the Official School of Film in Madrid. After the 1973 Chilean coup, Guzmán left the country and lived in Cuba, Spain and France.   Guzmán’s films gave shape to the memory and political conscience of Latin America. In films such as The Battle of Chile trilogy and Nostalgia for the Light, Guzmán returned time and again to Chile to film the wounds left by the 1973 coup that ousted Salvador Allende and to capture its halting recovery from it, creating a body of work that serves as a profound meditation on history and loss.

A filmmaker, screenwriter, researcher, theorist, and teacher, Guzmán dedicated over five decades to chronicling the modern history of Chile. Guzmán once wrote that “a country without documentary cinema is like a family without a photo album.” Cinema Tropical writes of his passing, “through his courage, artistic vision, and unwavering moral clarity, he gave Chile—and the world—an irreplaceable album of memory, resistance, and hope.”   Six of his films premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and he received the Grand Award from the European Film Academy. Guzmán’s epic body of work is the unprecedented record of one country’s journey.     The Films of Patricio Guzmán FREE to the general public until 6PM EDT Friday, September 25, 2026 in the US and Canada
