OCLC WorldShare Metadata Record Manager

Posted on June 21, 2013 by Rachel Wheeler

OCLCLast month OCLC announced beta testing has begun on their OCLC WorldShare Metadata Record Manager. They are collaborating with pilot libraries in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Spain on this new record management product.

OCLC WorldShare is an enterprise system and according to their news release, WorldShare Metadata Record Manager will be available to libraries using WorldShare Management Services (WMS) beginning in September 2013. In 2014, Record Manager will be available to all OCLC cataloging members using WMS, alternative cloud-based services or traditional integrated library systems.

Their goal is to help libraries maintain their collections and reduce costs in a global environment.

Next meeting: Tools for Metadata Creation and Resource Discovery

Posted on April 16, 2013 by Jennifer A. Liss

In the last few meetings, a recurring theme emerged regarding the relationship between metadata quality and discovery tool functionality. How do the capabilities of metadata creation tools such as SirsiDynix Symphony, Kuali OLE, DSpace, Oxygen XML Editor, and PhotoCat aid in the creation of consistent, standards-compliant metadata? How do discovery tools like IUCAT, IUScholarWorks, Image Collections Online, Archives Online, electronic text projects, Variations, dozens of stand-alone digital projects, and (eventually) the Avalon Media System leverage metadata produced by metadata creation tools?

At this meeting, we will demonstrate a few tools for metadata creation and discuss the use of metadata in resource discovery interfaces.

All are welcome to participate!

DATE: Tuesday, April 30
TIME: 9:30—10:30am
PLACE: Wells Library Room 043
TOPIC: Tools for Metadata Creation and Discovery

Dewey (DDC 23) Released as Linked Data

Posted on June 23, 2012 by Rachel Wheeler

Michael Panzer’s Dewey Blog announced on June 19th that the full DDC 23 classification set has now been released as linked data. Panzer is on the OCLC Linked Data Research Team.

According to the Dewey.info website, it is “… an experimental space for linked DDC data. The intention of the dewey.info prototype is to be a platform for Dewey data on the Web.” Yes, Dewey.info is not necessarily new to the metadata community, but just look at all the updated bells and whistles:

New:
*Access to Edition 23 (assignable numbers and captions)
*Access to the top three levels of the DDC in twelve languages
*Access to Abridged Edition 14 (assignable numbers and captions) in three languages *Actionable URIs for every class
*Classification semantics encoded in SKOS Representations for machines (RDF) and for humans (XHTML+RDFa)
*Different RDF serializations (RDF/XML, Turtle, JSON)
*Exposed SPARQL endpoint
*Data is reusable under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license

Compare Panzer’s example of a sample “old” data identifier for nuclear physicists: http://dewey.info/class/539.7/2009/07/about.en with a URI that accesses a single DDC 23 class: http://dewey.info/class/539.7/e23/2012-06-14/about.en.

And don’t forget that the LCSH URI is available for nuclear physicists: http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh92006769, as is the FAST URI: http://experimental.worldcat.org/fast/1040385/

Yowza–good stuff!

Tools for managing scienfic data

Posted on September 6, 2011 by Jennifer A. Liss

Tools for managing scienfic data

The California Digital Library announced that they are developing an extension for Microsoft Excel that allows science researchers to manage and share their data sets. Find out more about the project at the Digital Curation for Excel Project (DCXL) blog: http://dcxl.cdlib.org/. Project developers are currently taking input from researchers via Twitter: http://twitter.com/dcxlCDL.

Why is data curation important? This page on the DataCite website has a good answer.

What incredible potential for data reuse. What new discoveries might we enable? What new services will be created if we facilitate open data exchange?
